Lyttle helps Comets beat winless Dream

Sancho Lyttle was not going to let the Houston Comets give up a large lead for the second game in a row. In place of injured Olympian Tina Thompson, Lyttle had 15 points and 18 rebounds to help the Comets hold off a late rally to beat the winless Atlanta Dream 72-65 on Thursday night. “I just wanted to go in and grab every rebound tonight,” Lyttle said.


Young’s three-point play lifts Silver Stars

Sophia Young had 20 points and 12 rebounds, including a three-point play with 5.5 seconds left to give the San Antonio Silver Stars a 68-67 victory over the Sacramento Monarchs on Thursday night. Trailing by two points, Young drove the lane and was fouled by Adrian Williams-Strong. The basket was good to tie score, and Young then hit the go-ahead free throw.

Breeden locks up another Olympic spot in butterfly

Elaine Breeden has won the 200-meter butterfly at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials with a time of 2 minutes, 6.75 seconds. Breeden’s performance Thursday night followed her second-place showing in the 100 fly, which also should be good enough for a spot in Beijing. Kathleen Hersey claimed the expected second spot in the 200 fly, touching behind Breeden in 2:07.33.


Jackson to lead Australia in Beijing

Seattle Storm forward Lauren Jackson will lead the Australian women’s basketball team at Beijing, where they will try again for the gold medal after winning silver at the last two Olympics. Australia, which will also have world championship MVP Penny Taylor in the team, lost the gold medal finals to the United States in 2000 and 2004.
